Hairbrush Phone Case

Hairbrush Phone Case

brush.jpg

I'm used to seeing strange products and beauty gadgets here in the Allure offices, and I'm all in favor of practical innovations that make lives and beauty routines easier. What I don't love, however, is when a brand invents a problem (ugh, beauty is SO HARD) and then tries to sell me something to fix it. Enter the YoBrush, a combination iPhone case and hair brush. The YoBrush snaps onto your phone like any other cover, but the back is covered in spiky plastic bristles so you can brush your hair on the go. Because, ladies, we are just too busy having it all to worry about protecting our phones AND having perfect hair at all times, am I right? I have some questions.
• The brand markets it as a "new way to reduce clutter in your purse and simplify your life," which begs the question: Is it really that difficult to squeeze your phone and a mini brush into your purse? And is a phone case with stabby prongs that poke into your hands every time you hold it really "simplifying" anything?
• Why is it called a YoBrush? Is that like "Yo, Brush!" like you're trying to get the brush's attention? Or is it supposed to be Spanish, as in I Brush? (But "brush" en EspaƱol is actually cepillo. Thanks, high school Spanish class!)
• Is there a way to use it and not look like a complete weirdo? (All photographic evidence points to no.)
• Brushes trap loose hairs when you use them. Does that mean you end up with a phone case covered in hair?
• If you are, in fact, intrigued by this concept, allow me to direct your attention to these many travel-friendly brushes, available here, here, here, and here. They fit in your clutch and will cause you exactly zero discomfort while you're texting/playing CandyCrush/selfie-ing.
YoBrush, you are an enigma.

This review is brought to you by Allure.

The Yobrush however, is not viewed so negatively by all.  Many see it's practical uses as a multipurpose tool and appreciate the items design.  The bristles are not hard and therefore do not cause the uncomfortable grip that is described above.  If you are interested, I recommend that you try one for yourself.

The FLIR Systems iPhone 5 Case Lets You See Through Walls

The FLIR Systems iPhone 5 Case

 Lets You See Through Walls

The device works by combining the heat signature information it gets from the infrared camera with the live camera image from the iPhone. This then delivers a composite thermal heat image. The result is a negative-type image of the various heat levels in an array of different colors – bright red and white being hottest.
The smartphone case industry is beginning to move away from bling-encrusted cheap tat and into the realms of ‘useful accessory’.

FLIR systems has done just that and invented a case for Apple's iPhone with thermal-imaging capabilities. The FLIR One is an iPhone 5/5s case with both an infrared camera and a VGA one that’s supposed to add depth and detail to the infrared images.

What is it used for? FLIR Systems explains that it will be useful for pinpointing the position of pipes in walls, finding weak spots in your home’s insulation, finding hidden animals in bushes and identifying leaks before they cause serious damage.

Users will be able to take time lapse and panoramic thermal images, whilst being able to edit and share what they've captured. The case has its own battery pack, which holds a two hour charge, and weighs about the same as the phone. It retails for about $350 and will be available in August.

New Cadillacs to offer wireless phone charging

New Cadillacs

to offer

wireless phone charging

(Relaxnews) - In an attempt to cut in-cabin clutter and make their customers' lives easier, the company wants to make it simpler to keep handsets connected and topped up without having to fiddle with connecting cables and will become the first US automotive brand to offer wireless charging as standard on its 2015 models.
In theory, wireless charging is a great idea. Every time a smartphone is placed on a surface it starts to recharge its battery automatically. However, in practice it remains an emerging technology because of incompatibility. There is more than one wireless charging standard and different phone makers are undecided as to which version of the tech to support.

But, starting with the 2015 ATS Sport Sedan, for new Cadillac owners at least, this will no longer be a problem. And that's because even though the integrated charging mat has been developed by Powermat, it will support multiple, essentially competing wireless charging standards such as QI, which is good news.

The QI standard is the oldest wireless charging standard and, unlike Powermat's PMA standard, has already been adopted by a number of major phone makers, including Samsung and Nokia.

"Our lifestyles have evolved in a more mobile way than ever before and with that comes an even greater need for access to power in those places where we spend the majority of our time," said Powermat CEO Ran Poliakine. "Our integration into the Cadillac ATS is only the first step in the evolution of portable power in places that include your car, your coffee house and even your favorite sporting arena."

As well as the new ATS, which is going on sale this autumn, Cadillac also plans to bring the technology to the Escalade before the end of 2014.

"With 4G LTE capability and now wireless charging, Cadillac is embedding conveniences that have quickly become essential customer needs," said Ken Kornas, ATS global product manager.

Some handset makers, most notably Apple, don't support any version of wireless charging but that's a problem that can be easily overcome. There is a growing range of wireless charging cases on the market for the iPhone that support the various competing standards.

As well as US car companies, wireless charging pads are also being adopted by Starbucks. The coffee shop chain plans to offer customers at all of its US branches access to wireless chargers integrated into counters and tables that support the PMA standard.

StyleSwap bamboo cover for OnePlus One

StyleSwap bamboo cover

 for OnePlus One

oneplusbamboo2

Bamboo is a favorite snack of the giant panda and has long been celebrated for its medicinal purposes. Now, it's being used to give smartphones a natural-tinged new look.

OnePlus, the company behind the OnePlus One, just officially unveiled a bamboo cover option for its ultra-affordable flagship phone, which being sold unlocked directly to customers. Arriving at the end of August, it's but one of three StyleSwap covers initially planned for the OnePlus One, which will also include Silk White—described on the OnePlus site as "silky smooth"—and Sandstone Black.

Here's what Florence Ion had to say in Greenbot's OnePlus One review:

"If you’re looking for an 'un-flagship' that’s free of carrier restrictions, is equipped with a beautiful display, offers up a multitude of customization options, and is powered by software that's supported by one very dedicated team of developers, it’s certainly worth considering over any other unlocked Android device."

The OnePlus One isn’t the first phone to offer wood encasing: the Moto X can be customized with your choice of four different wood finishes, including bamboo. Unlike the Moto X, which assembles your phone for you (and locks you into your style choice), the StyleSwap cover is like buying IKEA furniture: you have to assemble it yourself. OnePlus posted a video to show that it is a pretty painless process, though.

The bamboo cover will cost $50 when it arrives at the end of August, while the Silk White and Sandstone Black covers will cost $30.

Multipurpose Projector Phone Case

Multipurpose Projector

 Phone Case

Every day, the world’s tech companies bombard us with announcements of new products. Nobody can review them all — so I’ve invited some of these companies to send me their product announcements as 300-character micro-blurbs; for each one, I’ve offered my first impressions.
In the comments, let me know which ones you think merit a full review!
Sprint LivePro combines a pocket projector (projects an image up to 10 feet diagonal) and 3G/4G LTE mobile hotspot. 4.7 inches square and 1.1 inches thick, it fits in a briefcase or purse and has an embedded speaker and a 4-inch touchscreen display. Runs Android Jelly Bean.www.sprint.com

Pogue says: Well, I suppose if you were planning to buy a cellular hotspot and a projector, you may as well save weight by having the two combined.
iPatch Case. A flick of a switch, and your smartphone’s cameras are blocked. This case protects your phone’s front and rear cameras, both from the elements and from creepy hackers. But it keeps the proximity sensors open so that your smartphone can still tell when you’re holding it to your face. $20 (currently a crowdfunding campaign).www.ipatchcase.com

Pogue says: I wasn’t aware that hackers taking over our iPhone cameras is a widespread problem. But if you’re worried about them — or the NSA — this idea beats a piece of duct tape.
Audio Chef. This free app plays narrated audio instructions, guiding you through cooking delicious dishes. Now you can follow a recipe without touching or looking at your phone. For iPhone. Four recipes included; 30 more for $1. www.audiochefapp.com
Pogue says: This one will boil down to the execution. How does the timing of the instructions work? And are the recipes any good?
Pixels.com iPad App. Test-drive artwork on your wall — no nails required! The virtual reality “View on Your Wall” feature shows art to scale. Browse through 7.5 million images from living artists and photographers; connect socially, preview, and buy in-app as framed prints, canvas prints, and so on. Free.  http://www.pixels.com/app

Pogue says: Yes. We’re only beginning to explore the possibilities of augmented reality. This concept seems super-cool.

The New cPulse LED Phone Case

The New cPulse LED Phone Case

Did you ever look at your Android phone’s back-light (that sometimes blinds your eyes when you’re in the dark) and think to yourself: “Wouldn't this be so much better if this was LED light?” Well, some tech guys from France thought of the exact same thing and came up with cPulse, the world’s first smart LED lighting case. It can turn your phone into a cool LED lighting source, unlike any other in the market right now.

But really, what would you do with a phone that lights up like an LED board? Glad you asked. Imagine you’re sleeping in an extremely dark room. People now normally use their phones as their alarms and so you set yours the night before. As the alarm sounds off, your phone’s LED light starts flashing, giving you even more incentive to get up right? Or let’s say you’re at a party, and things are starting to get boring. You whip out your cPulse encased phone, turn on the music, and start waving the LED light around. Or the kids are bored at home and so you start an LED light shadow game.

How it works is simple. You connect the cPulse case, which has an articulated hinge, to your smartphone’s micro-USB port. Then you can download several cPulse apps from the Google Play Store, install them in your phone, and now you can enjoy the different lighting experiences it offers. You can even share the lighting file format with others who also have cPulse, just like you would any music or video file. The LED panel also has touch buttons for easier use, and the case has an external micro-USB port so you don’t have to remove it when you charge or connect to your computer. The case also serves as protection for your phone and the LED screen as well.
